The Fray · Gate system

Kestrel's Reach

The busiest crossroads in the Fray, and it knows it.

Character

The busiest crossroads in the Fray, and it knows it. Governed by the Exchange Council, an elected body of trade-guild representatives who care far more about keeping goods moving than about anyone's politics back home. Cosmopolitan, transient, endlessly mixed — “everyone passes through Kestrel eventually” is a local saying and a fact.

Economy

Exports finance, brokerage, and trade services; imports nearly everything, because that's the business it's in. Self-sufficient via Aldergate's agriculture domes and orbital algae farms, but thrives entirely on being the place deals get made.

Wealth

Prosperous, unevenly. The guild elite and established merchant families do very well. The transient dockworkers and new arrivals who crew the actual ships live in the older, cheaper sections of the Exchange known as the Underdecks — the wealth is real, but it doesn't reach everyone equally.

Rumors & mysteries

When Aldergate's foundations were first dug, survey crews broke into a buried structure that predated the colony entirely. Large sections of the Exchange's oldest sublevels are, quietly, built directly into Precursor ruins nobody has fully mapped — a fact the Council doesn't advertise, since half the guild families quietly profit from what does get pulled out of the deep levels.

Who lives here

The Exchange (Station)

Capital: No separate capital — the guild council runs it day to day

A sprawling free-trade station in orbit around the Tanager gate, the busiest of the four rings in the system: a single, endlessly-expanding habitat. Home to the Long Market, a marketplace that has genuinely never closed since it opened. Its oldest sublevels — the Underdecks — are built directly into unmapped Precursor ruins.

Aldergate (Planet)

Capital: Aldergate City

A temperate, terraformed world and the system's real population center: several million people, agricultural domes, and a university district known for trade law and sector history. Something older than the colony is buried under its foundations.
